Herðubreið

Herðubreið is a 1,682 m tuya in the Highlands of northeast Iceland, standing alone above the Ódáðahraun lava desert near the Askja volcano. Its steep walls and flat top formed when lava erupted under an ice-age glacier and could only pile upward. Icelanders voted it their national mountain. Most people reach only its foot, on summer-only 4x4 tracks, and admire it from the desert; the summit is a hard scree climb.
