Aldeyjarfoss Waterfall

About the place
Aldeyjarfoss sits on the Skjálfandafljót, the glacial river that forms Goðafoss downstream. The water drops about 20 metres over black lava into a milky-blue pool. What sets it apart is the rock: tall, remarkably regular hexagonal basalt columns line the gorge on both sides, like a natural amphitheatre around the falls. It lies at the northern edge of the highlands south of Bárðardalur, far down rough roads that few travellers take.
