Oxarfjordur – point of view

About the place
On the eastern edge of the Tjörnes peninsula, Route 85 runs along a low cliff above Öxarfjörður and the bay opens up: the glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum braids across black sand to the sea, with mountains and the mouth of Ásbyrgi beyond. From late spring into summer the cliffs fill with puffins and other seabirds, close enough to watch from the roadside, and small waterfalls drop to the shore on either side. It is one of the easiest wildlife stops on the Diamond Circle.
