Húsavíkurkirkja

The little wooden church above Húsavík's harbour is the town's emblem and one of Iceland's most photographed. Consecrated in 1907, it was laid out as a cross by Rögnvaldur Ólafsson — the first Icelander trained as an architect — in the Swiss chalet style, and built entirely of timber shipped from Norway. A 26-metre steeple draws the eye up from the quay; inside, a barrel-vaulted nave leads to an altarpiece of the Raising of Lazarus by Sveinn Þórarinsson.
