Akureyri Church (Akureyrarkirkja)
About the place
The most recognisable building in Akureyri sits on a hill above the town centre, its two stepped towers modelled on Iceland's columnar basalt. Consecrated in 1940, it was designed by Guðjón Samúelsson, the state architect behind Reykjavík's Hallgrímskirkja, and a broad stairway climbs to it from the main street. Inside hang vivid stained-glass windows — the central pane said to have come from an English cathedral — with bas-reliefs by Ásmundur Sveinsson and a model ship suspended overhead. Entry is free.
