Urdakirkja

About the place
Urðakirkja stands in the green Svarfaðardalur valley inland from Dalvík, a small white timber church with a green roof and red trim below steep northern peaks. Photographers favour it. The present church dates from 1902, built after the 1850 church was destroyed in the great storm of 1900. It still holds a pulpit from 1766. Unusually, it began as a farmer's church, built and owned by the family at the farm Urðir, whose name means a rocky slope.
