Orbis et Globus
About the place
Grímsey, a small island about 40 km off Iceland's north coast, is the only part of the country the Arctic Circle crosses — and Orbis et Globus marks the line. Unveiled in 2017 and designed by artist Kristinn E. Hrafnsson with Studio Granda, the nearly nine-tonne concrete ball, three metres across, is moved a little further north each year because the Circle drifts about 14.5 metres annually. Around 2047 the line leaves Grímsey, and the sphere is meant to roll off the island with it. Reaching it means a walk across open moorland from the harbour at Sandvík.
