Grímsey Bird Cliffs
About the place
Most people come to Grímsey for the cliffs that wrap the island. Through summer the basalt holds one of Iceland's largest Atlantic puffin colonies, sharing the rock with fulmars, black-legged kittiwakes, guillemots and razorbills. Behind the rim, on flatter ground, Arctic terns lay their eggs. The puffins keep to the burrowed western slopes, while the sheer eastern faces go to the cliff-nesters. It is raw Arctic seabird watching, a short walk from the village.
