About the place
Akureyri View Point is a lay-by high on Vaðlaheiði, on the old Ring Road above the eastern shore of Eyjafjörður. Pull in at the picnic tables and the whole town sits across the water — Akureyrarkirkja and its twin towers on the hill, the harbour and its ships below, the snow-streaked Súlur behind. There is no walk, yet few roadside stops in North Iceland catch a town and its fjord this completely, by day or under the near-endless summer light.
