Húsavík Whale Museum
About the place
The museum occupies a converted slaughterhouse on Húsavík harbour, on the shore of whale-rich Skjálfandi Bay. Its centrepiece is a full 25-metre blue whale skeleton — the largest animal that has ever lived — beached in northern Iceland in 2010. Eleven whale skeletons hang in all, and eight rooms cover the biology, ecology and history of the 23 species found off Iceland. It began as a hotel exhibit in 1997 and is now the natural companion to a whale-watching trip.
