The Herring Era Museum
About the place
In the early 1900s, herring turned the remote fjord town of Siglufjörður into one of Iceland's busiest ports. This award-winning museum recreates that boom across five restored buildings: a salting station, a boat house of restored vessels, and a reconstruction of the factory that boiled the catch into oil and meal. Costumed events on the quay still show how the barrels were packed.
