Leirhnjukur Volcanic Field

About the place
Leirhnjukur is part of a vast volcanic system formed during the Krafla Fires eruptions between 1975 and 1984. The marked trail leads across young black lava fields created by these powerful events. Along the route, visitors encounter steaming fumaroles, bubbling mud pools, and surreal rock formations. The contrast of dark lava, yellow sulfur deposits, and turquoise thermal pools creates an otherworldly landscape. Despite the age of the eruptions, the ground remains hot in places, making it essential to stay on marked paths.
