Viti Crater Lake

Viti Crater Lake

About the place

Viti is a small explosion crater formed during a major eruption in 1875. The crater lies on the rim of the vast Askja caldera in the Icelandic Highlands. Its main feature is a geothermal lake with opaque milky-blue water and moderate temperatures. The contrast between the turquoise water and the steep dark crater walls creates an otherworldly landscape. Bathing here offers a rare chance to swim inside an active volcanic system surrounded by raw wilderness.
