Lake Mývatn

Mývatn is a broad, shallow lake in a zone of active volcanism south of the Krafla volcano, in North Iceland. A lava eruption more than two thousand years ago shaped it, leaving a scatter of islands and pseudocraters. Cold springs feed it, and each summer its shores become one of Europe's richest breeding grounds for ducks and other waterbirds — which is why the basin around it is a protected nature reserve. The name means 'Midge Lake', after the insect clouds that feed all those birds.
