Þeistareykir

Þeistareykir is a raw geothermal field on a high, lonely plateau south-east of Húsavík. Its ground hisses with fumaroles and bubbles with mud pots, stained vivid mineral colours by the heat below. Part of the Krafla volcanic system, it was near-untouched until a geothermal power station rose here in the last decade. A new paved road from Húsavík has made it easier to reach, but there are no marked paths or fences — explore slowly and with care.
