Jökulsárgljúfur

Jökulsárgljúfur is the great canyon of North Iceland: a roughly 25-kilometre gorge, up to 120 metres deep, cut by the glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum in a series of glacial floods. It was its own national park until it merged into Vatnajökull National Park in 2008, and now forms the reserve's northern arm. Along it lie Ásbyrgi's horseshoe cliffs, the lava towers of Hljóðaklettar and the falls of Dettifoss, Selfoss and Hafragilsfoss.
