Vesturdalur Valley

Vesturdalur Valley

About the place

Vesturdalur lies in the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon, within Vatnajökull National Park in north-east Iceland. It is best known for Hljóðaklettar, the “echo rocks”: basalt columns splay out upright, sideways and in swirling rosettes, the worn-out cores of old crater vents. A network of marked loops, about 6.5 km in all, threads between the formations and past the rust-red Rauðhólar craters, close to the glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum.
