Fontur Lighthouse

Fontur marks the outermost point of the Langanes peninsula, a thin spit of land pushing into the sea at Iceland's far northeastern corner — the place Icelanders half-jokingly call 'world's end'. The Langanesviti lighthouse sits above sheer cliffs 50 to 70 metres high; its first light shone in 1910, and the plain concrete tower standing today dates from 1950. Beyond it there is little but wind, waves and seabirds. Reaching it means a long gravel road over open moorland, past cliffs that hold some of the biggest bird colonies in Iceland.
