Svalbardseyri Lighthouse
About the place
On the east shore of Eyjafjörður, facing Akureyri, a squat orange lighthouse stands beside the village of Svalbarðseyri. The plain concrete tower — a white band, a red lantern — has guided boats towards Akureyri since 1920 and still flashes today. People stop for the outlook: the whole fjord in front of you, town and mountains across it, fishing and whale-watching boats coming and going, sometimes the whales themselves. From Akureyri it is a short detour, right by the road.
