Lombo do Mouro Viewpoint

Lombo do Mouro is a stop on the mountain road, and the drive is half of what people remember. The road climbs in tight curves, and the viewpoint sits on one of them. On a clear day the view opens over the valley below and the ridges of central Madeira. Clear days are not guaranteed. Cloud settles on this stretch and can shut the view down completely, which makes it a better add-on than a destination. Fit it into a day already built around levada walks and the high peaks, and take what the weather gives.

• The road closes. It has been shut at times, including in January 2026. Check that it is open before you drive up.
• Rockfall. Rocks come down onto this stretch of road and onto the viewpoint itself.
• Nothing on site. No toilets, drinking water or information point is mapped anywhere near the viewpoint.
• Fog is normal here. Cloud sits on this part of the mountain and can leave nothing to see. There is no shelter and nothing else to do.

Everyone arrives by car. The road up is narrow and full of tight curves, and the viewpoint sits on one of the bends. It works as a stop on a drive between the high ground and the valley, not as the start of a walk. There is no bus to the viewpoint itself, and no car park at the spot — the mapped parking lies further along the road.

Better: a clear day, when the cloud base is above the mountain road.

Avoid: days with cloud down on the peaks, and any day the road is closed.

Fog is common on this stretch and can leave nothing to see at all. The view is the only reason to stop, so look at the mountains from below before committing to the drive.
