Pico da Murta Viewpoint is a miradouro in the mountainous interior of Madeira, Portugal. From the road a path and two flights of stairs climb past a terrace with picnic tables to the marked viewpoint on the crown of the hill, where the view runs the full 360 degrees over ridgelines, jagged peak formations and the valleys on either side. There are no toilets and no drinking water at the site, and the small bar there was shut on visits in 2024 and 2025.

What makes it special
The view only opens once you climb. A path leaves the parking area and turns into two flights of stairs; the dedicated miradouro sits above the second, and from there the horizon runs unbroken all the way round — ridge behind ridge, jagged peak formations along the crests, and a village in the valley on either side. It is quiet ground, calm enough to sit a while at the top and watch the light move across the interior. In August 2024 a six-day fire burned most of the ground around the viewpoint; both villages came through it intact.
Good to know
- Easy to miss: the stop is easy to drive straight past — set the map pin before you set off.
- No toilets: there are none at the viewpoint, and no drinking water anywhere near it either.
- The bar is unreliable: the tiny bar by the viewpoint was closed in 2024 and closed again in 2025, so carry food and water up with you.
Getting there
You can drive to within sight of it: leave the car near the old hotel and take the path up from there. The rest is on foot — a first flight of stairs to the terrace, a second to the miradouro itself. There is no way round the steps.
