Parish Church of Saint Mark the Evangelist

The shaded square beside the church gives the best view of the Drago Milenario, Icod's ancient dragon tree, whose exact age nobody knows. It is quiet there, and a good place to stand and look before going in.

Inside, the church is simple in its lines and elaborate in its detail. Paintings and carved sculptures fill the interior, a large pipe organ stands in the church, and there is a museum of its own to see as well. Most people come to Icod for the tree. The church next to it repays the walk across the square.

The church stands in the old centre of Icod de los Vinos, right beside the dragon tree, so the last stretch is a walk through town streets. Drivers use Parking del Drago, a paid car park about 160 m away in a straight line, and walk from there to the square. Buses stop at Matadero, about 270 m away. An information board stands on Plaza de Andrés Lorenzo-Cáceres, next to the church.

Best: weekday mornings, before tour groups visiting the dragon tree fill the old centre.

Avoid: Sunday mornings and feast days, when the church is in use for Mass.

The building serves its parish first, and the tree beside it is the town's main sight, which brings most visitors into the square in the middle of the day.

The Church of San Marcos is a consecrated Catholic church and the working parish church of Icod de los Vinos. Dress modestly, keep your voice low, and do not walk around the interior while a service is on. Leave the flash off when photographing the paintings.
