La Consolación Beach

The steps drop to a cove of dark rock and rounded pebbles, and the sound down here is the Atlantic rattling through the stones. Few people make the descent. The shore is raw and bare, with the feel of a hidden pirate cove, and on a calm day there is little to do but sit and listen to the ocean.

When the sea lies down, the water over the rocks is good for snorkelling. Covered seating areas give some shelter between swims.

• The cove was closed to visitors in April 2026; find out whether it has reopened before making the trip.
• The steps down are usable only at low tide and with little swell. Check the tide table and the sea before you set out.
• Swimming is for strong swimmers only: the waves run fairly strong over rocks and pebbles. Bring swim shoes.
• Dogs are not allowed.
• There are no toilets at the beach and none nearby.

The beach sits on the coast at El Guincho, in Garachico. A car park lies about 100 m away in a straight line, with a second, gravel-surfaced one about 330 m away. The Las Aguas bus stop is about 300 m away.

From the top, steps lead down to the shore. The descent is not particularly difficult, but it can only be used at low tide with a calm sea, so time your arrival to the tide.

Best: at low tide on a calm day, in the summer months when the north coast usually sees its gentlest sea. Avoid: high tide and days of heavy swell, which put the steps out of use; winter brings the biggest Atlantic swell to this coast. The beach can only be reached with the tide out and the sea down, so the tide table decides the visit more than the calendar.
