Skaftafell Glacier

Skaftafell Glacier

About the place

Skaftafell Glacier is a massive outlet glacier in Vatnajokull National Park, southern Iceland. The valley in front of the glacier impresses with its emptiness and scale. From the nearby heights, visitors can view the vast sandy plain (sandur) shaped by the glacier’s streams. The surrounding landscape is quiet and dramatic, with black volcanic sand contrasting with bright blue ice. Birds can often be seen nesting on the surrounding hills, while moraines — accumulations of rocks and debris pushed by the glacier — are visible along the ice front.
