Templar Castle of Ponferrada

About the place
Ponferrada Castle is a formidable fortress built on the site of an ancient Roman fortification and expanded by the Knights Templar in the 12th century. The structure is notable for its complex system of double defensive walls, numerous towers, and a massive entrance gate. Inside the stronghold, visitors can explore a vast library of rare medieval manuscript facsimiles and an exhibition dedicated to the history of the Templar Order. The castle's battlements offer panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains of the El Bierzo region. Today, the site is a national monument and a key landmark for pilgrims traveling on the Way of Saint James.
