The Commonwealth Farm

Þjóðveldisbærinn, the Commonwealth Farm, recreates the manor at Stöng — a real farm in the Þjórsárdalur valley in south Iceland that an eruption of Hekla buried in ash in 1104 and archaeologists later excavated. Built from turf, timber and stone in 1974 for the 1100th anniversary of Iceland's settlement, it stands as a low, turf-roofed longhouse with an open hearth at the heart of the Commonwealth-era hall.
