Gjarfoss Waterfall
About the place
Gjárfoss is the waterfall at the heart of Gjáin, a small gorge in the Þjórsárdalur valley of south Iceland. Much of Þjórsárdalur was buried by Hekla's eruptions and stays bare and grey, which makes the sudden green of Gjáin — moss, ferns, streams and dark lava columns — feel almost hidden. The little river Rauðá drops over a basalt shelf into a pool you can walk right up to, and the reconstructed Viking-age farm at Stöng is a short stroll away.
