Llucmajor covers more ground than any other municipality on Mallorca, from an inland town at the foot of Puig de Randa down to the coast at s'Arenal, Cala Blava and Cala Pi. The town made its living from shoes through the 20th century, and a shoemakers' memorial stands at its western gate. In 1349 the Battle of Llucmajor ended the independent Kingdom of Mallorca; a memorial to James III, killed on the field north-east of town, stands on the Passeig Jaume III.

When to go
Shoulder
Apr – May
Mild weather for walking the town and looking up at Puig de Randa, before the summer crowds reach the coast.
High season
Jun – Sep
The coastal settlements from s'Arenal to Cala Pi fill with summer visitors, and the midday heat sits hard on the inland town.
Low season
Oct – Mar
The coast goes quiet, while the town, a working place geared to its own residents, carries on much as it does all year.
How long to stay
A morning covers the town: the 18th-century church of Sant Miquel on the Plaça Santa Catalina Tomàs, the memorial to James III on the Passeig Jaume III and the shoemakers' memorial at the western gate. Puig de Randa rises about 4 km north-east of town, and adding it makes a full day. The coast is a separate stay — s'Arenal, Cala Blava and Cala Pi suit a longer beach holiday, with the town as a half-day outing from there.
Getting around
The municipality is spread across sixteen settlements. The town of Llucmajor sits inland on the road from Palma to Santanyí, about 15 km south-east of Palma Airport, while s'Arenal, Cala Blava and Cala Pi lie on the shore. The town is about 15 km from the sea, so a stay on the coast and a visit to the old town are two separate journeys — plan for the trip between them.
