Teror

Carved wooden balconies hang over the white house fronts of Calle Real de la Plaza, the street that leads to the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pino. Shepherds reported a vision of the Virgin near here on 8 September 1481, and Teror became the chief pilgrimage town of Gran Canaria and grew prosperous on it; many of the island's older families kept houses here. The old centre is under monument protection. People come for the basilica, the Sunday market and the feast of the Virgen del Pino on 8 September.

When to go

Shoulder

Mar – Aug

The drier half of the year in the northern hills; the market runs every Sunday, and on other days the old centre stays quiet.

High season

Sep – Sep

The feast of the Virgen del Pino on 8 September draws pilgrims from across Gran Canaria, and the town is at its fullest in the days around it.

Low season

Oct – Feb

At 543 m on the north side of the island, winter brings rain and cooler air than on the coast; bring a warm layer.

How long to stay

Half a day covers the old centre: the basilica, the quiet square in front of it (Plaza de Nuestra Señora del Pino) and the length of Calle Real de la Plaza. Come on a Sunday and the weekly market fills out the rest of the day. Around 8 September, when the feast of the Virgen del Pino makes Teror the island's main pilgrimage, staying longer makes sense.
