Cala Figuera

Working fishing harbour at the head of a fjord-like inlet, ringed by old boathouses and turquoise water

Cala Figuera is a fishing harbour and small district of Santanyí in the Balearic Islands, around 60 km south-east of Palma. The harbour lies at the end of a fjord-like inlet, with traditional buildings along the water and villas above its entrance; high cliffs run south of the village. The place was first recorded in 1306, though houses only went up at the end of the 19th century. Its fishing boats hold an exception that lets them fish the coast of the Mondragó Natural Park (Parc Natural de Mondragó).

What makes it special

The water in the inlet is turquoise and clear enough to watch small fish from the quay. Fishing boats tie up below the old harbour buildings, some of the most picturesque on Mallorca, and villas look down on the harbour mouth from the rock above.

A path follows the water around the harbour. Half an hour covers it at a stroll, longer if you stop at a table by the water. With no tourist beach, Cala Figuera was left largely alone by mass tourism, and the harbour still works: the local fleet holds an exception to fish the protected coast of the Mondragó Natural Park. Boats can be hired here for a day along that coast.

Good to know

  • No beach. There is no sand here; a few spots along the harbour path let you get into the calm water.
  • Taxis: there is no taxi rank and buses from the nearby coves are irregular. Book a taxi ahead if you depend on one to get back.
  • Food: the harbour has restaurants, but not many to choose from.
  • Water: there is no public drinking fountain nearby. Bring a bottle.
  • Boats: tour agencies and self-drive boat hire operate from the harbour.

Getting there

The Cala Figuera bus stop is about 250 m from the harbour in a straight line, with a route marker and a map board for the route between Cala Santanyí and Cala Figuera beside it. Buses from the surrounding coves are irregular and there is no taxi rank, so arrange a taxi in advance if you need one for the return.

By car, there is free street parking in the village and a free public car park about 500 m away in a straight line; a closer car park, about 300 m away, is for customers only. The rest is on foot through the village to the water, where the path loops around the harbour.

Best time to visit

Best: early morning, evening, and the start of September.

Avoid: the middle of the day in July and August.

In the summer months the owners of the holiday villas and apartments arrive and the village fills, while in early September the harbour is calm; early and late in the day the day visitors are gone and low light lies across the boats.

The quay edges and the rocks around the inlet are unfenced and can be slippery. If you swim, keep out of the channel: fishing boats and hired boats move in and out.
