Dyrholaey Viewpoint

Dyrhólaey is a high, cliff-ringed promontory on Iceland's south coast, a short drive west of Vík. Its name means "door-hill island", after the huge lava arch punched through the headland — wide enough that a light plane once flew through it. From the plateau the black-sand coast runs both ways, the Reynisdrangar sea stacks rise offshore, and the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap fills the inland horizon. Atlantic puffins nest on the grassy edges in summer, and an old lighthouse marks the highest point.
