Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach

About the place
Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach lies near the village of Vik on Iceland’s southern coast. The beach is framed by a dramatic wall of hexagonal basalt columns formed by cooling lava. Just offshore, the Reynisdrangar sea stacks rise sharply from the Atlantic Ocean. The jet-black sand is made of finely ground volcanic basalt shaped by constant waves. Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is also known for dangerous sneaker waves that require caution.
