Solheimasandur Plane Wreck

Solheimasandur Plane Wreck

About the place

The wreck is what remains of a US Navy Douglas C-117D — a military DC-3 — that crash-landed on the black-sand plain of Sólheimasandur in 1973. All seven crew survived, and the fuselage was left where it stopped; wind and salt have since stripped it to a bare aluminium shell. It stands alone on a vast flat of black sand between the Ring Road and the sea, and reaching it means a long, exposed walk or a paid shuttle.
