Eldheimar Volcano Museum

Eldheimar Volcano Museum

About the place

Eldheimar stands at the foot of Eldfell on Heimaey, in the Vestmannaeyjar islands off Iceland's south coast. The museum is built around one house the 1973 eruption buried in ash, then dug out and left where it stood — crushed rooms you look down into from walkways. Films, artefacts and a location-aware audio guide retell the night the island was evacuated and the fight with the lava. Upstairs, a second exhibition covers Surtsey, which rose from the sea nearby in the 1960s.
