Urdaviti Lighthouse
About the place
Urðaviti stands on the rugged eastern shore of Heimaey, the only inhabited Westman Island off Iceland's south coast. This edge of the island was remade in 1973, when the Eldfell volcano erupted without warning, buried part of the town and pushed black rock into the sea. The lighthouse sits among those dark lava fields, open Atlantic on one side, cliffs and islets on the other. Few people come this far, and in summer seabirds nest on the cliffs.
