Halldorsskora Gorge

Halldorsskora Gorge

About the place

Halldorsskora Gorge is a huge volcanic fissure carved into steep basalt cliffs on the southwest coast of Heimaey Island. The gorge looks like a giant vertical cut in the rock and opens straight into the ocean. It lies next to the famous Elephant Rock and is often considered part of the same volcanic cliff system. The cliffs are home to large seabird colonies, including puffins, fulmars, and gulls. The true scale of Halldorsskora is best seen from boat tours along the coast, while land access requires caution due to sheer drops and strong winds.
