Heimaklettur Rock

Heimaklettur Rock

About the place

Heimaklettur — the "Home Rock" — rises straight out of the sea at the mouth of Heimaey's harbour, the tallest point on the island at 283 metres. It is a wall of palagonite tuff, left by eruptions beneath ancient ice. The way to the summit is short but serious: steep wooden ladders bolted to the lower cliff, then a zig-zag over grassy slopes with ropes and chains at the exposed sections.
