Herjolfsdalur Valley

About the place
Herjolfsdalur Valley forms a natural amphitheater sheltered from strong Atlantic winds. The valley comes alive each August during the Thjodhatid festival, when thousands gather with music, bonfires, and traditional songs. Trails meander through the valley and climb the surrounding cliffs, revealing puffin colonies and sweeping views of the town and volcano Eldfell. The valley is named after Herjolf Bardursson, the first settler of Vestmannaeyjar, and visitors can explore the ruins of his ancient farm. A reconstructed turf house provides a glimpse into the life of early Icelandic settlers.
