Eldfell Volcano

Eldfell is a young volcanic cone on Heimaey, the only inhabited island of the Vestmannaeyjar off Iceland's south coast. It did not exist before January 1973, when a fissure tore open beside the fishing town, buried streets in ash and pushed lava towards the harbour. Today it is a dormant hill you can climb in under an hour, its slopes still red and black from the eruption, with views over the rebuilt town and the open North Atlantic.
