Beluga Whale Sanctuary
About the place
The SEA LIFE Trust Beluga Whale Sanctuary sits in Klettsvík Bay, a sheltered sea inlet on Heimaey in the Westman Islands. Two belugas, Little White and Little Grey, were flown here from a Chinese aquarium and moved into the bay that once held Keiko, the orca from Free Willy. You start at the harbour visitor centre, which also runs Iceland's only puffin rescue centre; in summer a short boat trip goes out to see the whales. It is an animal-welfare project, not a show.
