Vatnajökull National Park

About the place

Vatnajökull National Park covers the centre of Iceland, where active volcanoes sit under a vast ice cap. Glacier tongues, black-sand plains, canyons and waterfalls spread from its edges. From the south coast you reach it at Skaftafell, with a year-round visitor centre and a trail to the basalt-columned Svartifoss, and at Jökulsárlón, where icebergs drift towards the sea. Most of the interior is roadless highland, open only in the short summer.
