Fagradalsfjall
About the place
Fagradalsfjall is an active volcano on the Reykjanes peninsula, about 40 km from Reykjavík. For roughly 800 years the peninsula was quiet — then on 19 March 2021 a fissure opened in Geldingadalir at its foot, and lava flowed for half a year. Shorter eruptions followed at Meradalir in 2022 and Litli-Hrútur in 2023. They left black lava fields that still vent steam in places, reached only on foot by marked trails beneath a flat-topped mountain.
