Eldborg Crater

Eldborg Crater

About the place

Stóra-Eldborg is a textbook crater: a 50-metre cone of red-black scoria with a bowl 30 metres deep, at the foot of the Geitahlíð tuya near Krýsuvík. A fissure eruption around 2,400 years ago sent lava 2.5 km to the sea and left it the largest of five vents along the crack. From the rim you look into the throat on one side and across moss-grown lava to the Atlantic on the other.
