Krýsuvík Geothermal Area
About the place
Seltún is the showpiece of Krýsuvík, the main geothermal zone on the Reykjanes peninsula. In a compact hollow on the Mid-Atlantic plate boundary, superheated steam pushes up through a fissure system. Boardwalks thread between bubbling mud pots and sulphur-crusted vents, and mineral deposits streak the hillside ochre, rust and grey-green. For a half-hour stop, it delivers a lot.
