Gunnuhver Geothermal Area

About the place
Gunnuhver is a geothermal field at the tip of the Reykjanes peninsula, in south-west Iceland. Its main mud pool, about twenty metres across, boils loud enough to hear before you see it, and the wind tears the steam sideways. Sulphur and mineral deposits stain the crust yellow, orange and rust. This is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge coming ashore, and unusually for Iceland the springs run on seawater, not fresh.
