Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon

About the place

Blue Lagoon is Iceland's iconic geothermal lake, formed as a byproduct of the Svartsengi geothermal power station. The combination of silica, sulfur, and algae gives the water its striking milky-blue color and therapeutic benefits. Surrounded by vast fields of black lava covered in grey moss, the lagoon creates a dramatic, otherworldly landscape. Steam rising from the water contrasts with sharp volcanic rocks, enhancing the surreal atmosphere. Silica mud from the lake bed is used for skin cleansing, and nearby lava fields host nesting seabirds.
