Lake Kleifarvatn
About the place
The largest lake on the Reykjanes Peninsula sits in a rift basin between scree slopes and black volcanic sand, close to a hundred metres deep. No river feeds it or drains it — water seeps through fractured lava underground. After the June 2000 earthquakes it lost about a fifth of its surface into new fissures, then slowly rose again. Dark and still, it anchors the Krýsuvík geothermal loop south of Reykjavík.
