What makes it special
Look up in the great hall. Three large canvases by Manuel González Méndez, painted in the early 20th century, cover the ceiling with Apollo, Thalia and Orpheus. The hall stands where the stalls of the old Teatro Cairasco used to be: the society first set up inside the theatre, later bought it, and rebuilt it at the end of the 19th century.
On the first floor, the Salón Rojo hangs portraits of the society's presidents alongside figures from Canarian culture and politics — Benito Pérez Galdós, Viera y Clavijo, Luján Pérez, Fernando León y Castillo. Next door, the Salón Meifrén holds oil paintings by the Catalan painter Eliseo Meifrén Roig, made during his stay in Las Palmas in the early 20th century.
Outside, the façade by Fernando Navarro and Rafael Massanet fronts Plaza de Cairasco, and the building's terrace sits out on the square.
