Gerpir

Gerpir is the easternmost tip of mainland Iceland, a sheer headland climbing to about 660 metres out of the Atlantic east of Neskaupstaður and Eskifjörður. Its cliffs rank among the oldest exposed rock in the country, around 12 million years old, and walkers prize the whole peninsula for its emptiness and its seabirds. No road reaches the point: you drive a rough mountain track — summer-only, 4x4-only — over to the black-sand bay of Vöðlavík, then carry on foot. The payoff is standing at the far edge of the country with nothing but open sea to the east.
