Snæfell

Snæfell stands alone above the eastern highlands, north-east of the vast Vatnajökull ice cap. At 1,833 m it is Iceland's highest mountain outside the country's glaciers, a long-dormant central volcano. It lies within the northern part of Vatnajökull National Park, where wild reindeer graze the tundra. Climbers reach the peak from the Snæfellsskáli hut and follow marked posts up the western flank to a small summit ice cap. This is a full-day climb, not a roadside stop.
